When I was a new mommy, I invented a quiet little signal, two quick hand squeezes, that grew into our family’s secret “I love you.”
Long before she could debate the merits of pierced ears or the need to shave her legs, my daughter, Carolyn, would toddle next to me clasping my finger for that much-needed support to keep her from falling down.
Whether we were casually walking in the park or scurrying on our way to playgroup, if Carolyn’s tiny hand was in mine, I would tenderly squeeze it twice and whisper, “I love you.” Children love secrets, and little Carolyn was no exception. So, this double hand squeeze became our special secret. I didn’t do it all the time - - just every so often when I wanted to send a quiet message of “I love you” to her from me.
The years flew by, and Carolyn started school. She was a big girl now, so there was no need for little secret signals anymore... or so I thought.
It was the morning of her kindergarten class show. Her class was to perform their skit before the entire Lower School, which would be a daunting experience. The big kids - - all the way to sixth grade - - would be sitting in the audience. Carolyn was nervous, as were all her little classmates.
As proud family and friends filed into the auditorium to take their seats behind the students, I saw Carolyn sitting nervously with her classmates. I wanted to reassure her, but I knew that anything I said would run the risk of making her feel uncomfortable.
Then I remembered our secret signal. I left my seat and walked over to her. Carolyn’s big brown eyes watched each of my steps as I inched closer. I said not a word, but leaned over and took her hand and squeezed it twice. Her eyes met mine, and I immediately knew that she recognized the message. She instantly returned the gesture giving my hand two quick squeezes in reply. We smiled at each other, and I took my seat and watched my confident little girl, and her class, perform beautifully.
Carolyn grew up and our family welcomed two younger brothers, Bryan and Christian. Through the years, I got more experienced at the mothering game, but I never abandoned the secret “I love you” hand squeeze.
Whether the boys were running on the soccer field for a big game or jumping out of the car on the day of a final exam, I always had the secret hand squeeze to send them my message of love and support. I learned that when over-sentimental words from parents are guaranteed to make kids feel ill at ease, this quiet signal was always appreciated and welcomed.
Three years ago, my daughter married a wonderful guy. Before the ceremony, while we were standing at the back of the church waiting to march down the aisle, I could hardly look at my little girl, now all grown up and wearing her grandmother’s wedding veil, for fear of crying.
There was so much I wanted to say to her. I wanted to tell her how proud of her I was. I wanted to tell her that I treasured being her mom, and I looked forward to all the future had in store for her. However, most important, I wanted to tell her that I loved her. But I was positive that if I said even one word, Carolyn and I would both dissolve into tears.
Then I remembered it - - our secret signal. I left my place and walked back to Carolyn. As the organist began to play Ode to Joy, I took Carolyn’s hand and quickly squeezed it twice. Our eyes met, and she returned the signal.
There were no tears, there were no words exchanged, just a secret “I love you” that I created one sunny afternoon, when I was a new mother.
I am no longer a new mother... but a new grandmother. Today, I was strolling with my little grandson, Jake. His tiny hand was holding on to my finger, and I couldn’t help remembering his mother’s hand in mine over thirty years ago. As we walked, I gave his hand two quick squeezes and whispered, “I love you.” He looked up and smiled.

A reader in Florida, apparently bruised by some personal experience, writes in to complain, “If I steal a nickel’s worth of merchandise, I am a thief and punished; but if I steal the love of another’s wife, I am free.”
This is a prevalent misconception in many people’s minds—that love, like merchandise, can be “stolen”. Numerous states, in fact, have enacted laws allowing damages for “alienation of affections”.
But love is not a commodity; the real thing cannot be bought, sold, traded or stolen. It is an act of the will, a turning of the emotions, a change in the climate of the personality.
When a husband or wife is “stolen” by another person, that husband or wife was already ripe for the stealing, was already predisposed toward a new partner. The “love bandit” was only taking what was waiting to be taken, what wanted to be taken.
We tend to treat persons like goods. We even speak of the children “belonging” to their parents. But nobody “belongs” to anyone else. Each person belongs to himself, and to God. Children are entrusted to their parents, and if their parents do not treat them properly, the state has a right to remove them from their parents’ trusteeship.
Most of us, when young, had the experience of a sweetheart being taken from us by somebody more attractive and more appealing. At the time, we may have resented this intruder—but as we grew older, we recognized that the sweetheart had never been ours to begin with. It was not the intruder that “caused” the break, but the lack of a real relationship.
On the surface, many marriages seem to break up because of a “third party”. This is, however, a psychological illusion. The other woman or the other man merely serves as a pretext for dissolving a marriage that had already lost its essential integrity.
Nothing is more futile and more self-defeating than the bitterness of spurned love, the vengeful feeling that someone else has “come between” oneself and a beloved. This is always a distortion of reality, for people are not the captives or victims of others—they are free agents, working out their own destinies for good or for ill.
But the rejected lover or mate cannot afford to believe that his beloved has freely turned away from him— and so he ascribes sinister or magical properties to the interloper. He calls him a hypnotist or a thief or a home-breaker. In the vast majority of cases, however, when a home is broken, the breaking has begun long before any “third party” has appeared on the scene.

I took myself out on a date
and said I'm looking grand,
and when I got my courage up
I asked to hold my hand.
I took me to a restaurant
and then a movie show.
I put my arm around me
in the most secluded row.
I whispered sweetly in my ear
of happiness and bliss,
and then I almost slapped me
when I tried to steal a kiss.
Then afterwards I walked me home
and since I'm so polite
I thanked me for a perfect date
and wished myself goodnight.
There's just one little problem
and it kind of hurts my pride.
Myself would not invite me in
so now I'm locked outside!

To my Love!
Bright and beautiful You are, like sunshine
How I yearn that You become forever mine
You and me have become one
guess that this will happen did no one
Everytime I see You, You knock me off my feet
with You by my side everyday is a feast
Just hearing Your name makes me smile
where were You all this while
Your kiss drowns me in bliss
will I get an appointment to spend all my life with you Miss
I feel so light whenever my hand You hold
How did God give You a heart that glitters more than gold
Please be by my side till my last breath
the only thing that should take me away from you is my death
I Love You!

“I’m going to marry you one day.” Beth said to herlong time crush Jake. She wore her favorite blueteddy bear shirt. Her four-year-old blue eyes shinedin the sun.
“No you’re not, you’re a girl.” Jake said.
The California afternoon wind blew his lightbrown hair. Jumping off the monkey bars he laughedback to class.
Sitting alone and confused she didn’t knowwhat to do. Beth sat high on the monkey barscrying. How can her future husband just leave like that?
She was going to get him, but how? “I will not let him get away! I won’t! I won’t!”
15 years later:
“I love you, too, Jake.” Hanging up the phone she caught her mom smiling. “What?”
“When is he coming in from France? He’s been there for awhile.” She sat down on her blackleather couch. The house was made up of different Indian stuff. On the walls were differentdream catchers. Her mother was a full blood Cherokee Indian. She passed away when Beth waseight.
“He has a lot of schooling to do right now. Maybe this Saturday.”
Fixing her short overalls she thought of Jake. Who would have thought they were going todate when she turned five?
“Is he still living in Colorado?” Her mother Kay wore a white tank top with tan pants. Andlong blonde hair with pretty blue eyes. She was the most beautiful woman on Earth. And Bethis looking like her by the minute.
“Yeah, I hate having a long distance relationship.” She plopped on a leather chair.
“It’s ok baby, you know he loves you more than anything in this world. Love will keep youtogether.”
Beth could not help but smile. Her mother is and will always be her best friend.
Jake sat in his hotel the school rented for him. School of law. He loved going overseas foreverything. But he missed being with Beth. That hurt him the most.
Spending the lonely nights in the hotel made him think of how much it would hurt to spendthe rest of his life without her in it.
Getting up off his bed he went into the bathroom. Watching his reflection in the mirror, allhe could think about was Beth. He would leave Thursday, and get there Friday night.
Turning off the light he jumped into the cold bed. On a coffee table near his bed rested aframe with them in it. It was taken at a beach about two years ago. It was the best time oftheir lives.
It was Thursday morning and Beth waited for Jake’s morning phone call. He would call ateight — it was ten.
Beth got out of bed and got her favorite blue tank top. She took off her shirt andscreamed at the top of her lungs.
“What? What?” Her mother came rushing into her room. Staring at her naked daughter shesaw the lump of her breast. “Does it hurt?”
Beth could only say “No.” Looking at the lump, she cried in pain.
“Let’s get you to the doctor.”
“Ok, let me get dressed.”
Shutting the door behind her, the room became silent. Shaking she put on her shirt, andran out into the living room.
“Mom, where are my blue shorts?”
“In the dresser, second drawer.”
Finishing getting dressed she hopped into her car. Her red mustang drove like a baby.
They waited for the doctor to come in. Beth could not begin to think she had cancer. As hermind drifted off her cell phone rang.
“Hello?” Her heart skipped a beat, hoping it was Jake.
“Hey, how are you?” He asked out of breath.
“Could be better. Why didn’t you call me this morning?”
“Sorry, school got ahold of me today.”
“Why are you out of breath?” Looking stunned she stared at her mother.
“I’m so sorry, he’ll call back.” Her mother gave Beth a hug.
The doctor came in, and greeted his self. “Hello. I’m Kevin Baker.” He smiled while examiningher breast.
A few minutes went by while they waited for ananswer. “Yeah, it’s cancer, it looks like it’s been therefor a while.”
Jake sat in the waiting room, unsure about goingin or not. He just waited, five minutes passed as hewalked towards a CNA. “Hi. My girl friend is seeing adoctor right now, can I have the room number?”
She checked her files. “What’s her name?”
“Beth Fowley.” Jake looked around the waitingroom.
“Jake!” Beth said surprised. She gave him a hug. He held her tightly, never wanting to let goof his angel. “I missed you so very much. I left last night; I could not stand being without youagain.” He kissed her lips.
“I missed you, too.” Beth answered back.
“Let’s go home.” Kay hugged Jake.
Once they got home Jake grabbed her by the hand and sat her down.
“Beth, I loved you all my life. Ever since I saw you on the monkey bars, saying you weregoing to marry me. I knew I loved you. I can’t spend another lonely night at home without youbeing there. You make my life complete. Will you marry me, Beth?”
Tears of pain flooded her blue eyes. “I can’t marry you.” She shook her head, “I just can’t.”
Getting up, her mother tried stopping her. But Beth closed the door behind her. The doorthat she hid behind, hoping one day she could wake up, and the cancer could be gone. AndJake can have a wonderful life with her. Forever. How can he love someone that is going to diefrom cancer?
A week passed, message after message, Beth would not answer. Her mother would answerthe phone every time he called. Jake had no idea what was going on. He needed to talk to Bethright away, and holding his phone calls was not going to help one bit. It couldn’t help thecanyon deep whole in his heart that was full of pain.
He had to see her, whether she liked it or not. He had to tell her he didn’t care whathappened to her, he still wanted to be with her. Getting dressed in his blue jean shorts, and hisfavorite white shirt she loved to see him in. He got into his car.
Reaching her door he looked in the driveway, her mother’s car was not there. Now shewould have to face him, and not hide behind her mother. He knocked.
“Coming.” Beth answered, she opened the door. She wore a red robe with her name on it.She got from her grandma a few years ago.
“Please let me in, we need to talk.”
She could not be rude. They needed to talk alright, about how he was going to lose hisonly love to cancer. How was he going to take that? She opened the door wider, and he slowlywalked in.
“I hate how you can’t talk to me. I hate that we can’t be together. Don’t you understand Ilove you?” He ran his hand through his brown hair frustrated. “You can tell me anything youneed to. I’m here for you today, tomorrow, and forever. And you know this. Now what iswrong?”
He cradled her on the leather couch. All her fears, and pain went away for that moment.Nothing seemed to matter, but him and her, together, forever. A silent tear ran down her rightcheek and landed on Jake’s shoulder.
“I love you, that’s why I have to let you go.” She wiped her tear. Jake hated to see her soupset; she was usually a strong willed person. Her coming down like this was not usual, and itfreaked him out.
“Let me go? Come on, what’s wrong?” Jake held her tighter, giving her a light kiss on hercheek.
“I have breast cancer. I found out a few weeks ago. I don’t want to marry you, and haveyou get hurt…”
He stopped her words with the sweetest kiss man could make. All her doubts and fearsslowly drifted away like the wind. Everything fell into place; they found the love they thoughtthey had missed.
They will forever be in love’s arms.

My brother-in-law opened the bottom drawer of mysister’s bureau and lifted out a tissue-wrappedpackage. "This," he said, "is not a slip(纸片). Thisis lingerie(女士内衣)." He discarded the tissue andhanded me the slip. It was exquisite(精致的); silk, handmade and trimmed with a cobweb (蜘蛛网,蛛丝)of lace(花边). The price tag with anastronomical figure on it was still attached. "Janbought this the first time we went to New York, atleast 8 or 9 years ago. She never wore it. She wassaving it for a special occasion. Well, I guess this isthe occasion." He took the slip from me and put it on the bed with the other clothes we weretaking to the mortician(殡葬员). His hands lingered on the soft material for a moment, then heslammed the drawer shut and turned to me. "Don’t ever save anything for a special occasion.Every day you’re alive is a special occasion."
I remembered those words through the funeral and the days that followed when I helpedhim and my niece attend to all the sad chores (琐事)that follow an unexpected death. Ithought about them on the plane returning to California from the Midwestern town where mysister’s family lives. I thought about all the things that she hadn’t seen or heard or done. Ithought about the things that she had done without realizing that they were special.
I’m still thinking about his words, and they’ve changed my life. I’m reading more anddusting less. I’m sitting on the deck and admiring the view without fussing about the weeds inthe garden. I’m spending more time with my family and friends and less time in committeemeetings. Whenever possible, life should be a pattern of experience to savor(使有风味,尽情享受), not endure. I’m trying to recognize these moments now and cherish them.
I’m not "saving" anything; we use our good china and crystal for every special event-suchas losing a pound, getting the sink unstopped, the first camellia (茶花)blossom. I wear mygood blazer (颜色鲜明的运动夹克)to the market if I feel like it. My theory is if I look prosperous,I can shell out (交付,支付)$28.49 for one small bag of groceries without wincing(畏缩). I’mnot saving my good perfume for special parties; clerks in hardware stores and tellers in bankshave noses that function as well as my party-going friends’.
"Someday" and "one of these days" are losing their grip on my vocabulary. If it’s worthseeing or hearing or doing, I want to see and hear and do it now. I’m not sure what my sisterwould have done had she known that she wouldn’t be here for the tomorrow we all take forgranted. I think she would have called family members and a few close friends. She might havecalled a few former friends to apologize and mend fences for past squabbles. I like to think shewould have gone out for a Chinese dinner, her favorite food. I’m guessing--I’ll never know.
It’s those little things left undone that would make me angry if I knew that my hours werelimited. Angry because I put off seeing good friends whom I was going to get in touch with-someday. Angry because I hadn’t written certain letters that I intended to write--one of thesedays. Angry and sorry that I didn’t tell my husband and daughter often enough how much Itruly love them.
I’m trying very hard not to put off, hold back, or save anything that would add laughter andluster to our lives.
And every morning when I open my eyes, I tell myself that it is special. Every day, everyminute, every breath truly is ... a gift from God.

Shakespear once said love is a kind of sweet pain and sincere love is a bumpy road. I think that expained what true love is.
Fairy tales often ends with the ending of living happily ever after which are full of pink bubbles. Most people, especially girls, desire for a true love with their Prince Charming. So do I.
But,why do still many people break up in the end?I think what they look for is perfect love rather than true love.Because true love is rare indeed. professor in Harvard said that perfect love will require that we continually have the subtlety of the very wise, the flexibility of the child, the sensitivity of the artist, the understanding of the philosopher, the acceptance of the saint, the tolerance of the scholar and the fortitude of the certain and so on and so forth.

What is the one emotion that has everyone mystified? What is the one emotion that has started as many wars as it has ended? What emotion has had more plays, songs, and stories written about it than anything else? Love, that one emotion that makes enemies into friends and friends into enemies. So many legends surround this emotion, from the goddess Athena and Helen of Troy to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.
Love comes in so many different levels, that it doesn't appear to be the same emotion at all, but it is. There is so much to love, that it will be hard to put into this simple essay. It can tear people apart and make us do irrational things to bringing together entire nations. What can this emotion not do? It's hard to tell, but there is a lot it can.
This emotion, bring tears to our eyes when something happens to our family members, friends, and pets. When we feel love ripped from us, as in death or being spurned by another, we do things we wouldn't normally do, such as go on vi olent rampages, or mourn to the extent that our loved ones have to watch us constantly to make sure we don't try anything like su icide . Some can move on, always remembering the lost loved one after a while, but others can not let go. These are the ones that need our love and support the most.
There are so many levels to love, that I can only express a few of them here. These are the ones we see most in life. Friendship starts this list off. Yes, it doesn't seem like it, but we do feel love towards our friends, this is what helps us get along so well, and why we miss them when we don't see our friends for a long time. It's also why we hold certain friends over others no matter what happens. Sometimes, the bond between friends deepens to the point where a stronger bond of love is made, making them family.
Another level of love, are for our siblings and other family members. Even though we do things to our family members, and sometimes we don't like some of our family, that bond is still there. It's this family bond level of love that brought about the phrase, blood is thicker than water. We will do things for our brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, and children before we would even consider doing them for anyone else. Many wars have been started because of this family level, brother avenging brother or father, father protecting his wife and children, or even vice versa. This simple family bond can even extend to include our pets, amazingly enough, and that is a good thing.
A third level to love, is the bond that brings man and woman together. This level is among the strongest of them all. It is this level of love that has brought together kingdoms into nations in the past, and ended many great wars. It's is also for the love of a woman that has started a few of our well-known wars, like the Trojan Wars of ancient times. It's brought together families that have argued for years and years, such as in the Shakespearean play, Romeo and Juliet. Even though the two mentioned killed themselves in the end, it still brought their families together.
The last mentionable level of love is that bond between a mother and her children. There is no stronger, nor will there ever be. This bond starts from the very first tiny fluttering of movement and never ends, even after death of the child. A mother protects her children in the name of love, and directs them through life using it as the example to follow. Well, at least it should be. It's because of her children a mother will work at a job she hates, just to make sure they have everything they could ever want or need.
The phrase, love makes the world go round is very true. It's is our driving force, for what ever reason it may be. Poems, plays, and legends can only briefly touch the true meaning of love. We can only feel what that meaning is, and express it in ways only we can understand towards another. The true question we should be asking is not, what is life, but what is love.
What is love? I don't know, but I'll do what I can to express it to my son, my husband, my family and friends, and to every single pet I have or ever will own in the best possible way that I can.
